What is a chin augmentation?

The chin, just like the nose, defines the profile of your face, and a receding or small chin can put your face out of balance. A chin implant or a chin augmentation can be the solution. Particularly when you have a relatively short chin, or when your chin almost merges into your neck, having an augmentation done using an implant can give beautiful and subtle results.

*The doctor will determine if the treatment is necessary for medical reasons. * This treatment falls within the tax-exempt medical care as stated in article. 11-1-g Tax Law, 1968.

What are the advantages of a chin augmentation?

  • Results are immediately visible
  • No longer a receding chin
  • Recovery period: 10 to 14 days
  • You will be given a general anaesthetic for this treatment.

When am I a suitable candidate for a chin augmentation?

The surgeon will determine whether you are a good candidate for a chin augmentation. In some cases, liposuction of the neck or a nose correction may be more suitable. However, should a chin augmentation be the most suitable option for you, then you can decide how big the implant should be, together with the doctor.

How is a chin augmentation done?

Prior to your treatment, photos are taken for in your medical file. When performing a chin augmentation, an incision is made under the chin. The implant is inserted via this incision and is closed up with sutures. We use a unique technique for this, which gives minimal scaring. All that remains is a tiny scar that is hardly visible.

Chin implants can also be inserted via the inside of the mouth. An incision is made between the lower teeth and the bottom lip, at jaw level. This method leaves no scars but has one disadvantage; it can increase the risk of infection. After the sutures have been stitched, your chin is covered with a plaster bandage. The operation takes two to three hours to perform.

CONSULTATION

During your first consultation, we will discuss what this procedure entails. We will also discuss what bothers you the most about your chin and what you would like to do about this. We will discuss the various methods and operation techniques used and decide which is best for you.
We will also discuss with you what you can expect in terms of end results, the possible risks involved and the necessary aftercare. You will always receive honest advice and be informed clearly about the treatment and what needs to be done in the period afterwards.

After everything has been discussed, the plastic surgeon will decide whether you are a suitable candidate for a chin augmentation. The surgeon will ask you questions regarding your health, medical history and any possible medication you may be using. Should you use blood thinners, then you should stop using them at least one week before the treatment.

What can I expect after having had a chin augmentation done?

You will be expected back at the clinic the following day for a quick check-up. We will then check whether everything is going according to plan. You will need to keep the plaster bandage on for a week, which means that it is visible.  After these seven days, we would like you to come back so that the sutures can be partially removed.

The treated area will be swollen and bruised. The bruising will disappear quite quickly after your surgery; however, it may take several weeks before the swelling has subsided. Your chin will, therefore, be thicker for a while. You can use a cold pack to help reduce the swelling faster.
